Definition of Fineness

Definition of fineness

Fineness is to guide the dispersion process of the product. During the fineness detection process, the pigment is ground into finer particles and dispersed in the fluid equipment. It depends not only on the actual size of the individual particles, but also on the degree to which they are dispersed.

Coating fineness

Paint fineness refers to the particle size and distribution of pigments, fillers and other solid particles in the paint during the dispersion process. Paint fineness is one of the important indicators for evaluating paint quality, and it directly affects the coating performance, color, gloss, hiding power, adhesion and drying speed of coatings. The smaller the fineness of the paint and the more uniform the particle distribution, the better the performance and quality of the coating. Paint fineness is usually expressed in microns (μm).

There are many detection methods for coating fineness, including but not limited to: visual method, specific gravity method, drying method, optical method, specific surface area method, laser particle size analysis method, etc. Different detection methods are suitable for different types of coatings and application fields, and choosing a suitable detection method is very important to ensure the quality of coatings.

Scraper Fineness Meter

Fineness gauge, also known as fineness scraper or Hegman scraper, is a commonly used paint fineness measurement tool, mainly used to measure the particle size of pigments and fillers in paints. This method is simple and fast, and is suitable for rapid detection of paint fineness in production sites and laboratories.

The measurement principle of the scraper Fineness Meter is to apply the paint on the fineness scraper, and then judge the fineness of the paint by observing the distribution and display of the granular substances in the coating on the scraper. There are a series of pre-engraved grooves on the scraper Fineness Meter, and the depth and width of the grooves are different, representing different fineness levels.

The measurement steps are as follows:

Stir the paint well to ensure that the pigments and fillers in the paint are fully dispersed.

Take a certain amount of paint and apply it evenly on the scraper Fineness Meter to ensure that all graduated areas of the scraper are covered.

Use a scraper or similar tool to smoothly scrape off excess paint along the scraper to reveal the distribution of grooves in the paint on the scraper.

Observe how the paint is displayed in the grooves on the scraper. The fineness of the paint can be judged based on how the paint is displayed in grooves of different depths. If the paint fills a shallower groove but fails to fill a deeper groove, the fineness of the paint is between these two grooves.

The measurement method of the scraper Fineness Meter is affected by the type, consistency, viscosity and other factors of the paint, so it can only be used as a method to quickly detect the fineness of the paint, and cannot completely replace other accurate measurement methods, such as laser particle size analysis. At the same time, when comparing the fineness of different coatings, the same scraper Fineness Meter and operation method should be used.
