Determination of Moisture and Volatiles of Carboxymethyl Cellulose (CMC)

Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) moisture and volatile content can be determined by oven drying method, the specific steps are as follows:

  1. Take a sample with accurate weight and record its weighing mass (m1);

  2. Put the sample in an oven at 105°C and dry it to constant weight (that is, the mass change within 5 minutes of continuous weighing is less than 0.5%), and record its weighing mass (m2);

  3. Calculate the percentage of moisture content: moisture content (%) = (m1 - m2) / m1 × 100%;

  4. Put the dried sample into an oven at 550°C and burn it to constant weight, and record its weighing mass (m3);

  5. Calculate the percentage of volatile content: Volatile content (%) = (m2 - m3) / m1 × 100%.

Beichao reminds you: this method is only applicable to the determination of water-soluble polymers such as CMC, and different determination methods may be required for other types of substances.
