Determination of the degree of hydrolysis of PAM

The degree of hydrolysis of polyacrylamide (PAM) can be determined by the following methods:

  • Prepare a PAM solution with a certain concentration, and add an appropriate amount of hydrolyzing agent such as acid, alkali or enzyme.

  • Under constant temperature conditions (usually 25°C), fully mix the PAM solution and the hydrolyzing agent, stir well, and take samples regularly.

  • The concentration change of the hydrolyzate was measured by colorimetry, fluorescence method, ultraviolet spectrophotometry and other methods, and the degree of hydrolysis of PAM was calculated.

Commonly used colorimetric assay methods are as follows:

  1. Take out the test sample, add sodium bisulfite and potassium iodide solution in appropriate amount, add water to adjust the volume to a certain amount.

  2. React under constant temperature conditions, add isopropanol after reacting for a certain period of time to stop the reaction.

  3. Adjust the pH with dilute sulfuric acid solution, and then titrate with excess standard potassium bromate solution.

  4. Add a few drops of starch solution as an indicator and continue the titration to a blue endpoint.

  5. The degree of hydrolysis of PAM was calculated using standard potassium bromate solution as a control.

NBCHAO reminds you: In the measurement, conditions such as hydrolyzing agent, reaction time and temperature should be well controlled, and appropriate measurement methods and calculation formulas should be used to ensure the accuracy and repeatability of the measurement results.
