Viscometer (see Figure 4-2-113) and stopwatch are also indispensable tools for painting, used to adjust the viscosity to the specified value.

Paint viscosity is not constant and changes with temperature. That is to say, the same kind of paint is thicker in winter than in summer. The higher the viscosity of the paint, the more obvious the characteristics of the change with the temperature. Therefore, even if the same amount of diluent is added, the viscosity in summer is 13~14s, and the viscosity in winter is about 20s.

Fundamentally speaking, the same paint should be painted at the same dilution rate. For example, when the temperature is 30°C in summer, it should be painted with a viscosity of 14s. In winter, when the temperature is 5°C, it should be painted with a viscosity of 20s. Get in the habit of changing the viscosity of your spray depending on the air temperature.

The viscosity of the paint diluted with thinner varies with temperature as shown in Figure 4-2-114.
