Method for determination of water permeability of primers for interior and exterior walls of buildings

The water permeability test of primers used for interior and exterior walls of buildings is to evaluate their water resistance under different environmental conditions to ensure that the primer can effectively prevent moisture from penetrating into the interior of the wall in actual applications. The water permeability test results can guide the selection of suitable primer materials, ensure the quality and durability of wall coating, and improve the durability and service life of the building structure. The water permeability of primer used for interior and exterior walls of buildings is one of the important indicators for evaluating its performance. A commonly used water permeability testing method will be introduced below:

Test equipment and materials:

Water permeability test device

A graduated funnel-shaped glass device, including upper and lower glass tubes, chassis and other components. Among them, the upper glass tube has a scale, and the top of the glass tube is covered with tin foil.

Sealing material

Non-absorbent sealing material, used to seal the gaps between test panels and water permeability test devices.

experiment procedure:

  1. Test panels were prepared using the brushing method, applying two coats of primer to each sample. First, measure the density of the test panel according to regulations and calculate the brushing quality.

  2. Place the test panel in a horizontal state and ensure that the temperature and humidity of the test environment meet the standard requirements.

  3. Place the water permeability test device in the middle of the test plate, and use sealing material to seal the gap between the test plate and the water permeability test device to ensure that there is no water seepage.

The test is carried out:

  1. Use test water that meets the standard requirements and slowly pour it into the glass tube until it reaches the 0 mL mark of the test tube.

  2. After confirming that there are no bubbles in the water permeability test device, adjust the 0 mL scale of the test tube again, and cover the top of the glass tube with tin foil.

  3. After standing for a certain period of time in the specified test environment, observe and record the number of milliliters that the liquid level drops as the test result.

  4. Calculate the arithmetic mean of the two test results.

  5. Verify whether the difference between the two test results is less than 0.2 mL. If it is greater than this value, the test data will be invalid.

The accuracy and reliability of water permeability testing are critical to evaluating the performance of primers for interior and exterior building applications. By complying with the test procedures of standard specifications, the measured water permeability data can be ensured to be accurate and reliable, thus providing an important basis for the selection of building materials and the assurance of project quality.
