This instrument (Fig. 158) is a metal box 1 divided into two compartments by partitions 2. There is a light source 3 (60 volt electric lamp) in one grid, and a sample 4 is placed in the other grid, and what is arranged with the sample well is a mirror 5 and a tube 6 for observation. A piece of frosted glass 7 is assembled on the dividing plate, and concentric circles of different widths are described above.
The rack 8 that can move up and down by the small wheel is passed through the dividing plate. A ground glass 9 is installed at the lower end of the rack 8 . Frosted glass 10 sticks on the glass 7. The limit of frosted glass 9 and 10 is then pressed closely mutually; The frosted surface of glass all will be towards that side of glass 7. The small electric lamp shines on the ground glass 7 through the ground glass 11, and on the ground glass 7, the concentric circles reflected from the mirror and the sample arranged with the mirror well are drawn. At this time, the image of i in the mirror is clear, while the image of the sample is blurred.
By moving the bars 8_ the reflections of the circle reflected by the sample and by the mirror can be equalized. When the circles reflected from the mirror and the sample are the same, the position of the glass 9 is the standard of the gloss of the sample to the gloss of the mirror, and the pointer 12 is fixed on the scale with 100 divisions.
Figure 159 shows the characteristics of the circles reflected in the mirror and in the sample when the position of the glass 9 is different.
