Coating levelling method

What is leveling?

The leveling property of the paint is mainly a performance index that after the paint is applied, due to the irregularity of the paint film, the uneven surface flows into a smooth performance index. The main factors affecting the leveling of paint are the surface tension of body fluids, shear force and gravity.

Leveling Determination Method

The methods for measuring leveling mainly include brush coating, scraping and spraying. The time required for paint to be brushed, sprayed or scraped on the surface to be coated or the test base to disappear through the lines to form a smooth paint film surface, usually calculated in minutes.

Instruments used for leveling

The instruments or materials used to measure leveling are mainly:

(1) Tinplate plate (2) Black and white covering power paper (3) Paint brush (4) Spray gun (5) Stopwatch (6) Leveling Tester

Here we mainly talk about the leveling Tester. It is a corrosion-resistant stainless steel structure scraper. Generally, the incision has a set of evenly distributed grooves, 5 pairs. The wet film thickness of the grooves is 100 microns, 200 microns, 300 microns, respectively. 500 microns and 1000 microns.

How to measure paint leveling

If the brushing method is used, the paint film sample is prepared on the tinplate plate with a paint brush under constant temperature and humidity conditions. The brushing should be done quickly, and the time should not exceed 3 minutes, and then longitudinally from one side to the middle of the prepared sample plate. Apply one stroke on the other side, and press the stopwatch at the same time as the brush leaves the sample to measure the time required for the traces of the brush to form a complete smooth surface.Determination method of paint leveling with Figure 2

If the spraying method is used, the paint film is also prepared on the tinplate plate, and under constant temperature and humidity conditions, observe the time required for the surface to reach a smooth state without orange peel.

In contrast, the scraping method is more scientific. Under the same constant temperature and humidity conditions, the sample is scraped on the black and white hiding power paper with a leveling meter, and the hiding power paper will produce 5 pairs of different humidity levels as mentioned above. Film thickness stripes, do not move the jam after scraping (make sure the jam is parallel), observe which pair of stripes come together, and record the time when they come together.
