Emulsion Solid content determination

The solids content of an emulsion is an important indicator to evaluate its properties, which directly affect the properties and application results of the emulsion, such as viscosity, stability and coatability. By knowing the solids content, you can optimize the production process, improve the utilization of raw materials, and reduce costs. It is usually determined with reference to the national standard GB/T1725-2007. The steps of solids testing are as follows:

First, the cleaned vials are dried in an oven and weighed in mass (m0). Next, the appropriate amount of emulsion (m1) is precisely weighed, placed in a sample bottle, and dried at a temperature of 110±2°C. Weigh the vial several times until a constant weight (m2) is obtained.

Solids are calculated according to the formula:

Determination of solid content of emulsion with Figure 1

where W is the solid content of the sample (%), M0 is the mass of the dried vial (g), M1 is the total mass of the emulsion and the vial (g), and M2 is the total mass of the dried vial (g).

In addition, the conversion rate can be obtained by comparing the actual solids content with the theoretical solids content, which is calculated as:

This method effectively reflects the solid composition of the emulsion and provides important data for further applications.
