Asphalt solubility detection method

Asphalt solubility test is an important method to evaluate the properties of asphalt materials, and by measuring its solubility in trichloroethylene, it can reflect the quality and applicability of asphalt. The method follows a strict operating process to ensure the accuracy of the results and provide a scientific basis for road construction and maintenance.

Purpose and Scope of Application

The main purpose of the asphalt solubility test is to determine the soluble composition of road petroleum asphalt, polymer modified asphalt and liquid petroleum asphalt, especially the solubility of evaporated residues. This method uses trichloroethylene as a solvent and is suitable for the analysis of the physicochemical properties of asphalt and provides a scientific basis for its application in road construction and maintenance.

Instrument and material requirements

  • Analytical balances – sensitivity, not more than 0.1mg, to ensure accurate weighing.

  • Erlenmeyer flask—250 mL for dissolving bitumen samples.

  • Crucible – 50mL, suitable for filtration and weighing of solid residues.

  • Glass fiber filter paper - diameter 2.6cm, filter pore size 0.6um, to ensure the cleanliness of liquid filtration.

  • Other equipment – including 250mL filter bottles, bottle washers, 100mL graduated cylinders, dryers, ovens with automatic temperature adjustment, etc.

Methods and Steps:

Sample preparation

Asphalt specimens are prepared according to the T0602 standard.

The fiberglass filter paper is placed at the bottom of the Gowlslay crucible, washed with trichloroethylene and dried to a constant weight before cooling to accurately weigh the mass.

Test procedure

  •    Weigh 2 g of bitumen sample, place it in a pre-dried Erlenmeyer flask, add 100 mL of trichloroethylene, shake continuously until the sample is completely dissolved, close the bottle and leave it for at least 15 minutes.

  •    Install the crucible and filter paper on the filter bottle, wet the filter paper with a small amount of trichloroethylene, and pour the solution drop by drop until filtration is complete.

  •    Use trichloroethylene to clean the Erlenmeyer flask and filter paper to ensure that the filtrate is clear and colorless.

  •    Place the crucible in an oven at 105 °C±5 °C to dry for at least 20 minutes until it reaches constant weight.

Calculations & Reporting

The mass changes of the crucibles and filter paper were recorded, the soluble content was calculated, and repeated experiments were performed to take the average.

Allowable error

The repeatability error of the test results is 0.1%, and the reproducibility error is 0.26%, ensuring the reliability and validity of the data.

summary

The asphalt solubility testing method provides an effective means for the quality control of asphalt and ensures its reliability in practical applications. Through precise experimental procedures and strict instrumentation requirements, the test results can truly reflect the performance of asphalt, contributing to the successful implementation and maintenance of road works. The flexibility to adapt the testing method to different types of asphalt allows for a more comprehensive assessment of their suitability and durability.
