Asphalt evaporation loss detection method

This method is designed to determine the evaporation loss of petroleum asphalt under high temperature conditions, and is mainly used to evaluate the change in the properties of asphalt when heated. By using standardized instruments and rigorous experimental procedures, the residue after asphalt evaporation can be accurately measured and subsequent property tests such as penetration, ductility and softening point can be performed. This detection method provides an important basis for the quality control of asphalt materials in engineering applications.

Purpose and Scope of Application

Asphalt evaporation loss testing is used to determine the evaporation loss of petroleum bitumen at high temperatures to evaluate its performance changes under the influence of heat. This method is suitable for both liquid and solid asphalt, and after evaporation, it needs to be tested for penetration, ductility and softening point to ensure the reliability of the asphalt in a variety of engineering applications.

Instruments & Materials

oven

The internal size is required to be no less than 330mm×330mm, with automatic temperature adjustment function, and the accuracy is ±1°C. The diameter of the turntable is greater than 250mm, and the speed is 5.5r/min±1r/min.

Sample dishes

Use a cylindrical dish made of metal or hard glass, with an inner diameter of 55 mm±1 mm and a depth of 35 mm±1 mm, and prepare at least two sample dishes.

Other instruments

Including thermometer (range 0-200°C, graduation value 0.5°C), analytical balance (inductance not more than 1mg), asphalt melting pot and timer, etc.

Methods and Steps:

Preparation

  • Weigh the mass of the dried container dish (m) to an accuracy of 1mg.

  • Prepare the sample according to the standard, slowly pour the sample into the sample container, cool to room temperature, and then weigh the total mass (m) of the sample and the sample container.

  • Adjust the oven to 163°C to ensure that the turntable is level and the thermometer is positioned accurately on the edge of the turntable.

Test procedure

1. When the temperature of the oven is stable at 163°C, put the sample dish into the oven and heat it continuously for 5 hours, during which the temperature shall not be lower than 163°C.

2. After heating, quickly remove the sample container, cool at room temperature and weigh the mass (m').

3. Perform a penetration test on the residue, and determine the properties such as ductility and softening point as needed.

report

Parallel tests were performed to calculate the average of the evaporation losses of the two samples, and the results should be accurate to two decimal places.

Allowable error

When the evaporation loss is less than 0.5%, the repeatability error is 0.10% and the reproducibility error is 0.20%.

When the evaporation loss is ≥ 0.5%, the repeatability error is 0.20% and the reproducibility error is 0.40%.

summary

The asphalt evaporation loss detection method is an important means to evaluate the performance change of asphalt in a high-temperature environment, and is suitable for quality control and engineering applications of various types of asphalt. Through rigorous experimental procedures and standardized instrument configurations, this method ensures the accuracy and reliability of test results, provides a solid foundation for the scientific application of asphalt materials, and helps to promote technological progress and safe application in related industries.
