Application of X-Rite in MIPA Automotive Refinish Color Management

Pursuit of Inheritance Quality

MIPASE is a rapidly growing medium-sized company producing varnishes and coatings. The company was established in Landshut, Germany in 1948, formerly known as Paul Mittermayer GmbH, Lack & Farbenfabrik. After several years of development, the company moved to its current headquarters in Essenbach, Germany in 1996. Today, MIPA is a family-owned joint-stock company employing more than 950 people all over the world, supplying customers in more than 85 countries on all continents.

Color Quality Challenge

Based on market feedback, MIPA knows that finding the right color match is one of the toughest tasks professional car refinishers face. Today's vehicle design plays a major role in this challenge.

On the one hand, common car design now favors "seamless" production of the body and connected components. In the past, cars were designed to show the gap between the bumper and the body, preventing visual color differences or so-called "color coordination" problems.

On the other hand, today's color range is constantly growing and expanding. Also, the hue and brightness of special effects colors have the characteristic of changing with the viewing angle, making color matching and maintaining accurate color quality more difficult. This is also a big problem for automakers and car refinishers.

Taken together, these challenges make it increasingly difficult for auto refinishers to meet the needs of their customers. As Richard Fischer, Head of Color Matching at MIPA, puts it:

“We needed to provide solutions that would help our automotive refinish partners meet the ever-changing color demands of modern vehicle design. greater success."

Color Quality Solutions

To meet this challenge, MIPA turned to color professionals—X-Rite Pantone. Their technology combined with MIPA's own solutions creates the most complete toolbox, giving MIPA's customers around the world the tools they need to maintain quality and consistency when creating color.

The solution brings together the X-Rite MA91 portable multi-angle Spectrophotometer and MIPA's own MIX5.0 software. Software is used to start the device and generate a list of possible color matches. The combination of X-Rite instruments and MIPA software allows operators in the automotive refinishing industry to get close to a good color match on the first try.

"To make sure we can always guarantee quality, even when we're on the run, we need extraordinary color Measurement Instruments," says Richard Fischer. “We use X-Rite instruments in our labs; therefore, it is no problem for us to provide our customers with the same quality products that we use ourselves. Because when our customers are successful, we are also successful. "

Save time and resources

X-Rite's solution complements MIPA's industry expertise and saves auto refinishers significant time and resources.

"While there is no substitute for a skilled auto refinisher's sense of color, the X-Rite solution provides another valuable tool," said Armin Seitz, MIPA Color Matching Professional. "Combined with MipaMix5.0 software and our MCSII Color Chart system, the X-Rite MA91 is an important part of the solution we provide to our customers."
