What is grease? What does grease do?

Grease is a kind of lubricant with non-Newtonian fluid characteristics between semi-fluid and solid, which is obtained by dispersing one or more thickeners in one or more liquid lubricants. The basic characteristics of grease are that it has a certain shape, is easy to adhere, and has lower fluidity than the corresponding base oil.

The basic components of grease include:

1. Thickener. The thickener accounts for about 2%~35% in the grease, and is generally dispersed in the liquid lubricant in a colloidal state to form a spatial network structure, or only dispersed in the base oil in the form of a dispersed phase, which acts as an adsorption and restriction The role of base oil flow. The choice of thickener directly affects the mechanical stability, high temperature resistance, colloidal stability, water resistance and other properties of the grease.

2. Base oil. The base oil accounts for about 65%~98% in the grease, and it is the dispersion medium of the thickener. The choice of base oil directly affects the lubricity, evaporation, low temperature performance and compatibility with sealing materials of the grease.

3. Additives. Additives account for about 0% to 10% of the grease, which can improve certain performances of the grease. According to the performance requirements of the grease, structural improvers, antioxidants, metal deactivators, rust inhibitors, extreme pressure agents, oily agents, anti-wear agents, wire-drawing agents and other additives can be added.

The two basic functions of grease are lubrication and protection:

1) Lubrication: Grease has the effect of reducing the surface wear of two friction pairs in relative motion;

2) Protective effect: Grease can isolate or reduce the contact between the surface of the friction pair or the surface of the object and the corrosive substance, and play a role in reducing or slowing down the erosion and damage of the material surface by chemical action, including anti-rust, anti-corrosion and water resistance.
