How to measure film Gloss?

The so-called gloss is the ability of the surface of the paint film to reflect the light projected on it in one direction. The greater the amount of reflected light, the higher the gloss. The gloss of the paint film is an important indicator for decorative coatings.

Gloss measurement generally uses a photoelectric gloss meter. Gloss readings can be obtained on a photoelectric gloss meter. At present, the photoelectric gloss meter used for the measurement of paint gloss generally adopts 45. or 60° angle of incidence. The paint gloss measured by the specified 60° gloss meter (compared with the gloss of the standard board) is classified as follows:

name

high gloss

semi gloss or medium gloss

eggshell light

eggshell light

flat light

luster

70% and above

70%~30%

30%~6%

6%~2%

2%~2% or less

High-gloss paint films with more than 70% can be measured with a 20° photoelectric Glossmeter; on the contrary, for low-gloss paint films, it is more beneficial to use a photoelectric Glossmeter with a larger incident angle (such as 75°). Therefore, multi-angle Glossmeters or variable-angle Glossmeters are mostly used at present, thereby increasing the scope of testing.
