Conical Bending Test ASTM D522

The mandrel and T-bend tests performed under ASTM D522 are used to evaluate the flexibility of coated strip metal formed during the manufacturing process. This will be explained in more detail below.

"Standard Test Method for Mandrel Bending Tests with Attached Organic Coatings" ASTM D 522

ASTM D522 contains two test methods for determining the flexibility or crack resistance of organic coatings on metal or rubber-like material substrates.

Apply the coating material to be tested to a metal plate or a rubber-like material plate with a uniform thickness. After drying or curing, the coated panels were bent on a mandrel and the crack resistance of the coating was determined. In one test method, coated panels were bent on a tapered mandrel. Coated sheets, on the other hand, are bent on cylindrical mandrels of various diameters. Coatings attached to a substrate are elongated when the substrate is bent during article manufacture or the article is abused in use.
