American Industry Standard for Industrial Equipment Design; clean-in-place certification required.


absolute viscosity

with Newtonian material


ASTM

American Society for Testing and Materials related viscosity values. US organization responsible for establishing testing standards.


auto range

Standard Brookfield digital viscometers/rheometers feature a maximum viscosity value that can be measured using a specific spindle at the designed rotational speed.


pendulum

Spindle for use with PVS rheometers; 

Also called a "Bob/Stator" because it doesn't spin on this instrument. The sample cup rotates instead, causing a shearing action.


°C

is the scientific unit of temperature measurement; expressed as "Celsius" or "Celsius."


centiliters

unit of measurement in the cgs system to obtain viscosity; abbreviated cP.


Comm

Port the communication channel on the PC/computer to it, through which the data is transferred.


concentric cylinder

A cylinder within a cylinder. For viscosity measurements, a cylindrical spindle rotates within a cylindrical chamber. Also called "coaxial cylinders" because the two cylinders have the same centerline.


Tapered spindle

is an almost flattened circular spindle that is at a small angle relative to the rotating disk or disc.


CP or C/P

cylindrical spindle

Shaped like a cylindrical spindle.


Disc spindle

A spindle with a flat disk near the bottom of the rod. The shape of the disk axis is such that the calculation of the shear rate is approximated or averaged over the surface of the disk.


DIN

Deutsche Industrie Normung, the German organization responsible for setting testing standards; similar to ASTM in the United States.


Dyne - cm

A unit of measurement for torque.


°F

Scientific unit of temperature measurement; expressed as "degrees Fahrenheit". flow


ounce

is a scientific unit of volume measurement; abbreviated as oz.


Floor area

Bench space or area required for equipment items.


gallon

is a scientific unit of measurement; abbreviated as gal.


gap

, where the spindle rotates the distance between the spindle and the chamber or cup.


gram

A scientific unit of measurement for weight; abbreviated as gm.

Spindle protection bracket for standard Brookfield LV and RV viscometers/rheometers.


HA

The Brookfield torque range is suitable for measuring medium to high viscosity materials.

The Brookfield torque range is suitable for measuring "very" high viscosity materials.

The Brookfield test procedure in the DV-I+ and DV-II+ viscometers, which measures the viscosity of a material after a specified time interval.


torque

Measures the torque measurement capability of a Brookfield viscometer/rheometer measured in a Dharma; designations such as LV, RV, HA or HB are used to define the torque range of a particular instrument.


Torque%

is the amount of torque resistance measured by a rotating shaft immersed in the material.


volt

A unit for measuring voltage, unless otherwise specified; abbreviated as V. 


Viscometer

An instrument for measuring the viscosity of a material.


viscosity

is the resistance to material flow.

Viscosity = shear stress / shear rate


Viscosity range

The operating range of the Brookfield instrument using the identified spindle.


yield stress

The force required to cause material to flow.
