Determination of non-volatile matter content

1. Scope and Description

The non-volatile matter content of powder coating refers to the proportion of weight loss due to the volatilization expressed in percentage (%) [14].

2. Instruments and Materials

Oven, temperature can be controlled at (105±2)"C or (230±3)"C; aluminum box dish, flat bottom, diameter 50mm, height 10mm; balance, sensitivity 1mg.

3. Measurement method

(1) Weigh out (2.0±0.1)g powder sample first, and put it into the weighed aluminum pin plate.

(2) Put the aluminum box dish into an oven whose temperature has been kept at (105±2)"C for 1 hour, or (23±3)"C for 5 minutes.

(3) When putting the dish in the aluminum box, the action should be quick, so as not to reduce the temperature of the oven significantly. After the specified time is reached, take out the dish from the aluminum box.

Cool to room temperature and weigh to the nearest 0.1g.

4. Result representation

Calculate the non-volatile matter content according to the following formula:

Determination of non-volatile content with Figure 1

In the formula

NV - non-volatile content, %;

C  -  the mass of the dish and the contents after heating, g;

A - disc weight, g;

B - powder sample weight, g.

Results are reported as the arithmetic mean of two tests.
