Working principle and test result evaluation of Martindale wear-resistant testing machine

The fabric to be tested is pulled and loaded onto the lower plate of the machine (Martindale Abrasion and Tensile Tester TF210). Then there is the abrasive (the abrasive can be a small disc of worsted wool or wire mesh). The abrasive is then rubbed against the sample to be tested in an oscillating circle.

Make sure you check the fabric continuously to check for fraying. You immediately notice any change in fabric appearance, or when two yarns break, you immediately end the test.

Notice

The standard rubbing cloth should be replaced before each new sample is tested or before 50000 tests are completed. Check the standard rubbing cloth for soiling or wear (if any), replace it. This method is not suitable for fabrics thicker than 3mm. Samples can be washed or dry cleaned prior to testing.

Methods of evaluating test results

There are 3 Martindale methods for evaluating fabric abrasion resistance: specimen fracture method, mass loss method and appearance quality change method. Among the three methods, the sample fracture method is commonly used, with small error, intuitive test results, and easy comparison of the wear resistance of different fabrics. The evaluation of mass loss method and appearance quality change method is more complicated, but it can reflect the wear resistance of samples in different friction stages. It is very practical to analyze the use of fabrics in production enterprises or scientific research institutions.

How to analyze Martindale test results?

Take the sample breakage method as an example. Test results for Martindale machines are usually given in fractions of 1000 rubs or cycles completed. The higher the friction or cycle score, the more suitable the fabric for heavier applications. We basically classify fabrics based on test results.

  • Studies have shown that when fewer than 1000 wipes are obtained, the fabric is recommended for decorative purposes (i.e. accents and cushions), therefore, the fabric is not recommended for general use.

  • If the fabric produces results of 10,000 to 15,000 rubs, it is highly recommended for occasional use furniture. The reason why this fabric is recommended for light household use is because the fabric is delicately constructed or the fabric is made of fine yarns.

  • If the fabric provides friction of 25,000 to 30,000 rubles, it can be used for heavy work (on the main furniture of the house, which will be used continuously every day).

  • If the number of wipes exceeds 30,000, the fabric is suitable for both commercial and heavy-duty use (commercial furniture and environments).

  • Finally, people run into problems when they notice their numbers exceed 50,000. The answer is that such friction has little effect in practical applications, this is because the martindale test is only used for abrasion resistance, some other factors can affect the wear of the fabric, other factors such as chemicals used to wash the fabric, UV exposure, etc. , just like a fabric with a high friction number means that the fabric is resistant to cat's claws.
