Viscosity measurement - JIS Iwata Cup

The JIS Iwata Cup is an industry standard cup for testing Coating viscosity. It was jointly developed by the Japan Industrial Standardization Organization (JIS) and the Iwata Foundation to provide Coating manufacturers and users with a reliable method to measure Coating viscosity to ensure Coating mass meets standard requirements.

The cup is a conical cup whose shape and size are standardized to ensure that different laboratories use the same testing tools for Coating viscosity testing to obtain test results for repeatability. During the test, the Coating is poured into the cup and its viscosity is then determined based on the time the Coating has flowed from the cup. There are different JIS Iwata cup specifications depending on the size of the cup and the type of Coating used.

The JIS Iwata Cup test method is as follows:

Prepare test equipment: Standard JIS Iwata cups, scales and timers are required.

Preparation of Coating Samples: Coating samples need to be stirred and diluted as needed.

Preparation before the test: Turn the cup upside down and weigh it with Balance, recording the weight of the cup. Then wipe the inside of the cup with a clean tissue.

To test: Pour the Coating sample into a JIS Iwata cup and start counting. When the Coating starts flowing from the cup, stop the Timer immediately and record the time. Sex repeability test and average for more accurate results.

Calculate Viscosity: Calculate the viscosity of the Coating using the following formula: Viscosity = Kt, where K is the constant of the Iwata Cup and t is the time (in seconds) from the start of the Coating flow to the stop of the Timer.

NBchao reminds you: Before testing, you need to know the viscosity grade of the Coating used and choose the JIS Iwata cup specification that matches it. In addition, environmental conditions such as temperature and Humidity need to be controlled during the testing process to ensure reliable and accurate test results.
