Certain hotplates and hotplate stirrers allow you to connect an external temperature probe. The function of the external temperature probe is to allow you to monitor and control the temperature of the heated sample. This is the opposite of simply controlling the surface temperature of the Heating Plate.

Why use an external temperature probe?
The temperature of the sample can be more accurately controlled using an external temperature probe. By dipping the probe into the sample, you can monitor and control the sample temperature. Instead, when the temperature probe is not in use, the plate itself is heated to the set temperature of the instrument. This may not be completely accurate as the heating across the plate will not be perfectly even and you cannot be sure that the sample has reached the set temperature. Therefore, we always recommend using an external temperature probe if the temperature of the sample is important to your application. It is worth noting that if you are using the temperature probe on a hotplate without stirring, hot spots may appear in the heated sample. This is because stirring helps maintain temperature uniformity.
