Why does the Colorimeter need to be calibrated? Does it have a big impact on color measurement?

Like any piece of equipment or machinery, Colorimeters require maintenance to ensure they continue to function properly and with a high degree of predictable accuracy.

Calibration allows us to set a baseline for the instrument and ensure that it is maintained over time. Ensure daily calibration and annual calibration of the instrument. This is a separate method for consistent and reliable readings.

Our daily calibration routine starts with two measurements. Black measurements (called zero calibration) are performed using a special accessory to the instrument that absorbs all light. This accessory is called a zero calibration box.

The next measurement is using ceramic byte standards with traceable values. Measurements with the white ceramic standard should always be performed with the standard assigned to the instrument. Each white standard has a serial number for easy pairing with the correct instrument. Zero calibration and white calibration readings are used to set the instrument to a known state of calibration.

Daily and annual calibration is a necessary process for maintaining Colorimeters, Spectrophotometer s and other color Measurement Instruments. Both calibration measurements in the above procedure need to be new to ensure peak performance of the instrument. Daily calibration is performed by the customer at their own location and should be done every 8 hours or every shift.

In some cases the performance and accuracy of the color measuring instrument can be affected and calibration is required. Dirt and dust can prevent the instrument from performing well. Stains and scratches on the white calibration tile can also cause the instrument to return incorrect readings.

Annual calibration includes:

  • Routine maintenance of the instrument

  • Align and clean optics

  • Recertification of Calibration Standards

  • Multiple adjustments bring the instrument to factory specifications
