Paints and coatings are used on a large number of products to enhance their aesthetics and appearance. Various types of coatings such as varnishes, paints, conversion coatings and other paint products typically suffer from different types of damage during the manufacturing process and during their use. Therefore, the impact resistance of the paint needs to be tested to determine its strength and quality.
How to measure impact strength?
To measure the strength and quality of paints and coatings, standardization bodies have introduced various standards such as ASTM D 2794, ASTM D609. These standard test procedures were introduced to evaluate the effect of coatings on materials by delivering impact forces that deform coatings or coatings rapidly.
How to conduct impact test?
The organic coating to be tested is applied to a thin metal plate and left to perform four or more tests to accurately measure the results. Under the force of impact, when the coating is bent, a weight of standard weight is dropped from a height to impact the material that will deform or destroy the coating as well as the material. Indentations can be extruded or extruded. Steadily increasing the distance, dropping the weight from the usual 1" or 25mm at a time, allows you to determine the quality of the material from the set point where you set up the machine and fail.
Types of Impact Tests
There are two tests to determine the impact resistance of a coating:
Weight dropped on a punch set on a coated metal sheet, also known as indirect paint impact test
The weight on the punch falls directly on the coated metal plate, also known as the direct impact test
In both test methods, the damage done is first effectively observed and then its quality is assessed. These highly standardized methods are used to measure the properties of paints and coatings during rapid deformation.

Paint Impact Test
The paint impact test is a very traditional and well-known test used to characterize the quality of paints, varnishes and coatings applied to different types of paints, substrates and composites under defined operating conditions. In a routine laboratory, a test dynamic force is applied on a metal-coated substrate to determine the impact strength of the coating. Different types of coating impact tests allow different impact forces to be applied at different frequencies, weights, and number of impacts to test the quality of thinly coated metal substrates. The impact behavior against the material is then displayed both graphically and numerically to clearly define the critical force.
