Importance of peel/bond strength and test method?

The Importance of Packaging

The packaging industry plays an important role in providing highly secure and durable packaging products to all production verticals and helps to meet the packaging requirements of all manufacturers in different production verticals.

Why do you need packaging materials?

Packaging can seriously affect the appearance of a product. If the packaging is not done well, it can greatly affect the product it is packaged in. Packaging not only affects the quality and appearance of a product, but also affects product purchasing behavior and product decisions. Since packaging products have so many benefits and effects, manufacturers need to ensure the quality of packaging materials so that they can ensure the safety and quality of the products packaged inside and can provide 100% customer satisfaction.

How to measure packaging quality?

The quality of the packaging material can be measured by conducting several tests on the packaging material to ensure that the performance of the packaging product plays a major role in the product quality. There are many testing instruments available to test the quality of these packaged products.

Peel/Bond Strength - Key Properties of Packaging Adhesives

One of the main characteristics that seriously affects the quality of packaged products is adhesive strength. Tape is a well-known packaging product used to create a strong bond strength between two materials. These tapes are used to create sufficient adhesion between the adhesive material and the substrate to which it is applied. Tape is used in all vertical directions to securely wrap the container and create enough tack or tactile bond material to ensure product durability.

Impact of poor peel/bond strength on product

If the bonding strength or touch of the adhesive is not good in quality, it will directly interfere with the packaging quality and may cause product damage. The quality of the adhesive can be determined by carrying out several tests on the product which are required to determine the quality of the product. This test helps manufacturers control their decisions about purchasing adhesives for various packaging applications. The viscoelasticity of the adhesive depends on the strain rate of the adhesive product and different test parameters. One of the common tests performed on adhesives in testing laboratories to determine their quality is the peel test. A peel test is performed to determine the strength required to separate the adhesive from the substrate.

How to perform a peel test?

For peel testing, a very thin substrate such as metal foil is glued to a rigid substrate, which is then further clamped to the rigid substrate. Force is then applied on the strip from a specific angle to separate the two materials in opposite directions. This shows that the measurement of peel depends on the angle of peel, the force required to peel the sample from the plate depends on the viscoelasticity of the adhesive, and helps to judge the strain rate of the adhesive. Perform the peel test from different angles such as 90 degrees, 180 degrees, etc.

Relationship Between Adhesive Thickness and Peel Strength

The thickness of the adhesive plays an important role, affecting the peel strength of the adhesive. It also depends on the nature of the adhesive. For adhesives, the behavior of elastomers and thicker bonds require enormous force to peel the adhesive from the substrate. Rigid adhesives or adhesives with thin bonds require less force to peel the adhesive from the substrate.

Peeling of the material helps measure the young modulus or stiffness of the substrate, which accounts for the thickness of the two substrates provided under the peel test. The pressure applied to sensitive tapes has a noteworthy effect, helping to study the peel strength of the tape. Peel test is the better testing machine that can be used to test the bond strength of bonded substrates, providing highly reliable and accurate test results.

Peel Strength Tester – Perform Peel Tests

Peel Strength Tester is a widely used testing machine used in different packaging product manufacturing industries to test the adhesive or cohesive strength of self-adhesive products such as tapes, labels, etc. Adhesive products are tested to measure the maximum force required for the adhesive material to separate from another substrate to which it is applied. Peel strength test is one of the suitable testing machines for measuring the adhesive strength of packaging materials. This test is performed to determine the bond strength of the adhesive even under harsh working conditions.
