How to Measure Durability
Methods to calculate, measure and determine the durability of products can be found in the Rub Tester. By performing friction testing at four speed changes and over multiple cycles, an appropriate quality assessment can be determined and internal standards set according to the ASTM D-5264-98 2011 Wear and Friction Testing Standard. Knowing how to measure durability tells you a lot. After all, a product that fails a stress test is inherently inferior.
1. Determine the sample size
The first step is the most obvious step. While the test receptor will vary depending on the weight category you use, the sample itself should be six by three inches. Make sure the cut is clean and use the included scoring jig to slice through the flakes of grain.
2. Friction and wear test
This section will give you all the information you need to determine the durability of your product. The friction Tester presses down on the specimen and measures several variables based on speed and weight. These include color retention, dyeing, abrasion resistance and more.
An important factor to consider when examining a product's durability is its resistance to wear and tear. Abrasion testing determines the durability of a product. How much pressure can it withstand? How long will the product last? Wear and the time it takes to get to that point is indicative of the quality of any form of textile or paper.
3. Test Evaluation
As with any half-assed process, you'll need to test multiple samples before passing your final verdict. One yarn may fuzz quickly while another may hold twice as long. Establishing the result domain helps inform the final evaluation of the decent friction test.
