What is NSF certification for food grade grease?

NSF-certified products are required to meet the organization's rigorous food-grade standards and procedures, including extensive product testing and material analysis, and undergo a thorough evaluation at every stage of development before they can be certified. Products also require follow-up assessments, including site visits, to ensure ongoing monitoring of standards to ensure public health safety.
NSF-certified products display the applicable NSF certification mark, three of which relate to greases and lubricants used in food processing:
1) H1
For lubricants in applications where incidental contact with food is likely and limited to trace amounts - not more than 10 parts per million (0.001%), otherwise the food is classified as unsafe for consumption. H1 lubricant formulations may only contain certain base oils, additives and thickeners as specified by FDA regulations (21 CFR 178.3750).
2) H2
Lubricants suitable for use only in food processing facilities where food contact is not possible. This is a more general certification for substances used in lubricant formulations that have toxicological restrictions and therefore cannot contain substances such as carcinogens, mutagens, teratogens, inorganic acids or intentional heavy metals (such as antimony, arsenic, cadmium, lead , mercury or selenium).
3) H3
Follow FDA 21 CFR 172.860 and 172.878 regulations for lubricants that contain only edible oils, such as corn oil, cottonseed oil, or soybean oil. They are also biodegradable and generally recognized as safe (GRAS) under FDA 21 CFR 182 or FDA 21 CFR 184. These lubricants are often used for cleaning or rust prevention on hooks, carts and similar equipment.
