How to Determine Film Gloss?

The so-called gloss is the ability of the surface of the paint film to reflect the light projected on it in one direction. The greater the amount of reflected light, the higher the gloss. The gloss of the paint film is an important indicator for decorative coatings.

Gloss measurement generally uses a photoelectric gloss meter. Gloss readings can be obtained on a photoelectric gloss meter. At present, the photoelectric gloss meter used for the measurement of paint gloss generally adopts an incident angle of 45° or 6o°. The paint gloss (compared with the gloss of the standard board) measured by the specified 6o° gloss meter is classified as follows:

High-gloss paint films with more than 70% can be measured with a 20° photoelectric Glossmeter; on the contrary, for low-gloss paint films, it is more beneficial to use a photoelectric Glossmeter with a larger incident angle (such as 75°). Therefore, multi-angle Glossmeters or cross-angle Glossmeters are mostly used at present, which increases the scope of testing.
