Composition of paint

The terms "paint" and "coating" are often used interchangeably. In most cases, however, paints are considered to be used primarily for aesthetics, while coatings are primarily used to prevent degradation of the substrate or to prevent corrosion. Industrial coatings are often used to protect metal substrates from corrosion in structures such as bridges, pipes or exterior metal tank surfaces.

Regardless of the intended use, a coat of paint or coating will protect the surface and will also provide color, gloss and other properties. A coating can be defined as a substance spread over a surface for protection or for decorative purposes.

Coating can be broken down into two main components: pigmentation and carrier. Pigmentation usually consists of colorants, corrosion inhibitors and fillers, although other insoluble raw materials can also be included. The carrier brings the pigmentation to the surface and incorporates it into the paint film. The vehicle usually consists of a resin or binder, a solvent and any additives that may be included in the formulation.
