What is a Surface Profiler?

A surface profiler is a profiler used to measure the surface roughness of an object, typically to facilitate substrate preparation and the application of protective coatings. The tool records the roughness or cross-sectional shape that can be observed on the surface.

Surface profilers consist of a set of steel or plastic pins that fit tightly against each other in a frame, keeping them in the same plane while allowing them to move independently and perpendicular to the frame. When the pins are pressed against the object, they conform to the topography of the object's surface. By looking at the gauges, a technician can determine the height or depth of surface irregularities. A gauge can also be used to draw a profile on another surface.

Proper use of a surface profiler can improve the overall performance of a coating and is a factor in determining how a coating is applied for adhesion, coverage and overall volume. If there is a surface profile that is too large, the amount of coating required will increase. It is also possible that the peak will remain uncoated, reducing the effectiveness of the coating and increasing the chance of future corrosion. Alternatively, when the surface profile is too small, insufficient coating adhesion can result, leading to premature failure of the coating.

The profile height of the surface should be accurately measured to ensure that the correct surface preparation has been performed and to optimize the performance of the coating. This parameter is desired as it determines the adhesion, coverage and overall volume of the coating applied.
