What is asphalt paint?

Bituminous paint is a paint used to construct vapor resistant and flexible protective coatings according to its formulation and polymer grade. The flexibility and protection against steam and water of asphalt coatings can be affected by the grade of polymer as well as fiber reinforcement.

Common applications for asphalt coatings include areas under the screed. It is an excellent protective coating and waterproofing agent, especially on surfaces such as concrete foundations.

Bituminous coatings can be used on the exterior and interior of carbon steel pipes. It is usually black, and when properly applied, bituminous coatings provide excellent cathodic protection for nearly all structural steel pipes located underground.

Bituminous coating is considered to be one of the cheapest ways to provide cathodic protection to pipelines. It is also a simple coating process, making it suitable for casing as in road drilling.

Bituminous coatings are mainly composed of hydrocarbon molecules. This molecule is stretched, making movement difficult. As such, bitumen is solid, especially in ambient settings. However, it flows very slowly and is very viscous.

Almost all asphalt coatings are ready-to-use and solvent-free. They are chemical and UV resistant, making them reliable protective coatings against wear and corrosion. It can be applied by various methods using a roller, brush or spray.

Its effect on waterproof surfaces is impressive, especially on surfaces that come into direct contact with water penetration, moisture and non-pressurized liquids or water.
