What is a water soluble resin?

Water-Soluble Resins Coatings containing water-soluble resins undergo polycondensation or polymerization. They contain binders that can be used in epoxy and alkyd formulations. A major ingredient in latex based paints or any water reducing paint or paint as they are completely soluble in water and other solvents.

What is Water Soluble Resin? Picture 1

Water-soluble resins are usually found in paints that are readily soluble in water, such as water-based paints, water-based reducible paints, or latex-based paints. These paints consist of well-known latex products and those based on synthetic polymers. When mixed with water, these resins often form micellar dispersions rather than true solutions. Particles range in size from 0.01 to 0.1 microns and produce clear mixtures without added pigments.

Water-soluble resin is also called alkali-soluble resin.

Water-soluble resin has the following characteristics :

  • high gloss

  • Coating Porous Materials

  • good corrosion protection

  • Wetting and stabilizing

  • good pigmentation

  • Good fluidity and leveling properties

  • Good heat resistance and wear resistance

  • low toxicity and flammability

  • Cleans up easily with water or water-based solutions

Although it takes longer to dry, the water soluble resin provides excellent surface finish and protection. Heat and air flow reduce curing time. Water soluble resins are available for conventional application techniques and spraying.
