What is water-based paint?

Water-based paint is an environmentally friendly surface treatment that uses water as a solvent to disperse the resins used to make paints or paints: water accounts for 80% of the solvents used. Its purpose is to make paint or paint easy to apply and at the same time an environmentally friendly product. Water-based paints are widely used because of their low VOC (volatile organic compound) content (less than 3.5 pounds per gallon of water). It can be applied to wood (eg furniture) and plastic substrates.

This type of paint contains a water soluble resin; therefore it is completely soluble in water and other solvents. Water-based coatings contain organic co-solvents as it undergoes condensation or polymerization reactions. It has the following qualities:

  • high gloss

  • high corrosion protection

  • Wetting and stabilizing

  • good pigmentation

  • Good fluidity and leveling

  • Good heat resistance and wear resistance

  • Low toxicity and flammability

  • Cleans up easily with water or water-based solutions

Although it takes longer to dry, it produces an excellent finish and protection. Heat and air flow increases cure time. It can be used in conventional application techniques and spraying. Water-based paints are one of the better paints for porous materials. It contains binders that can be used in epoxy and alkyd resin formulations.
