Traditional die designs need to be pushed into backup rolls to create a uniform coating distribution (contact coating). Using modern manifold technology, we can significantly reduce roll contact pressure, thereby reducing roll damage and lip wear.
In any system, it is important to have quick replaceable inserts, easily replaceable lip differentials, and the ability to add shear without having the feed lip rotate and come into contact with the web and rolls ( Figure 20.8).
