ASTM G85 Salt Spray Test

ASTM G85 is a standard practice for modified salt spray testing. Although ASTM G85 is based on ASTM B117, it provides more aggressive test conditions, such as using test solutions with lower pH values, alternating between corrosive and neutral atmospheres, or using corrosive electrolyte mixtures.

ASTM G85 consists of 5 appendices, each containing modifications to standard ASTM B117 atmospheres.

appendixRevise
A1Acetate salt spray test, continuous
A2Cyclic acidification salt spray test
A3Seawater Acidification Test, Cyclic (SWAAT)
A4SO 2 salt spray test, cycle.
A5Dilute electrolyte circulation fog dry test.

Appendix A5 is also called in the ASTM D5894 test.

Orientation: It is important to note that when testing in a salt spray cabinet, samples need to be supported or suspended between 15° and 30° from vertical, parallel to the main direction of mist flow through the chamber is recommended, based on the on the main surface being tested. Samples need to be supported by the bottom or sides.
