Paper and board - Determination of quantification

The basis weight of paper and paperboard refers to its mass per unit area, usually using grams per square meter (gsm) as the unit. The basis weight of paper and board affects its thickness, stiffness, strength, durability and cost. Different types of paper and board require different basis weights depending on their use. Quantitative measurement usually adopts the weighing method, that is, the paper or cardboard sample with known area is weighed and its quantitative is calculated.

Quantitative quantity of paper and cardboard refers to the fiber mass content in paper or cardboard, and its determination method is as follows:

  • Sampling: Random sampling in paper or cardboard, usually using a circular template or a square template, and sampling with a cutting device.

  • Drying: Dry the sample in a Drying Oven to a constant weight.

  • Calculation: Subtract the initial weight from the dried mass to obtain the dry weight of the sample. The dry weight of the sample divided by the sampled area is the quantification of the sample. If it is cardboard, it is necessary to calculate the quantity of one side according to the quality of both sides of the cardboard.

Beichao reminds you: when performing the measurement, you should pay attention to the preparation and storage of the sample to avoid the influence of external factors on the quality of the sample. At the same time, we should also pay attention to the operating specifications to ensure the accuracy of the measurement results.
