Paper and board - Determination of degree of sizing

Paper and board sizing refers to the ability of the paper or board surface to absorb applied glue. This value is usually determined by measuring the diffusion range of glue on the surface of paper or cardboard or the residence time of glue on the surface of paper or cardboard after gluing under certain conditions. The higher the degree of sizing, the easier it is for the surface of the paper or cardboard to absorb glue, and the bond between the glue and the paper or cardboard will be stronger. Therefore, the degree of sizing is one of the important indicators to measure the suitability of paper or cardboard for gluing processing.

The degree of sizing of paper and board can be determined using a K & N sizing meter. The steps are as follows:

  1. Place the sample to be tested on the test bench of the sizing meter.

  2. Spray a layer of glue-coating solution evenly on the surface of the sample.

  3. Before the glue solution dries, place a piece of transparent tape on the surface of the glued sample, and rub it vigorously several times to make the sticky substance on the tape fully absorb the glue on the surface of the sample.

  4. The tape is quickly removed from the sample surface and the tape is adhered to a clear polishing pad.

  5. Put the polishing sheet into the test head of the sizing meter, adjust the pressure and speed of the instrument, and let the polishing sheet slide on the tape at a specific speed and force.

  6. Record the value displayed by the instrument, which is the sizing degree of the sample.

Beichao reminds you: In order to ensure the accuracy of the measurement, the measurement should be repeated several times under the same experimental conditions and the average value should be taken. In addition, the combination of different tapes and gluing solutions will affect the measurement results, so a suitable tape and gluing solution should be selected before measurement.
