Pencil Hardness Tester

The purpose of a scratch hardness test is to evaluate the ability of a coating material or coating surface to resist scratches. This test is of particular reference value for furniture or vehicle paints, and is also a useful aid in the development of synthetic resins or other materials for the formation of coatings.

Pencil scratches belong to a type of scratch hardness testing instrument. This is a simple and quick way to use twenty pencils with a hardness rating ranging from 9B to 9H with a standard stand. The pencil is subjected to constant pressure and moves at a fixed angle across the surface, ensuring minimal operator error. The hardness of a pencil is determined by two hardness scales, the softer one will produce a writing mark and the other will create a noticeable scratch on the coating.

The PhysiTest Pencil Hardness Tester is manufactured based on the ASTM D 3363 standard. The PhysiTest 13102 Pencil Hardness Tester has a load weight of 750g.
