Introduction

In general, it is necessary to prepare samples with specific, precise dry film thickness using coatings. For the reasons described, it is necessary to approach the theoretical wet film thickness at this nominal value. Of course, you can use a range of scrapers with different clearance heights. However, it is easier and more economical to use a Film Applicator with an adjustable gap height. The infinitely adjustable Film Applicator, model 411, allows the application of a theoretical wet film thickness of 1-1000 μm. Two limiting springs form the reservoir, and the desired clearance height is set on the micrometer screw. The device is corrosion-resistant.

Test principle

It is suitable for various soft substrates such as cardboard, plastic sheets, leather, textiles, etc., which are usually uneven or partially raised, and the coating with uneven thickness will be produced with a general squeegee type Film Applicator. This problem can be solved with a spiral applicator. When the applicator drags over the substrate, it rolls the substrate flat. The grooves formed by the threads on the applicator are used to produce the film of the specified thickness (Figure 5). The theoretical film thickness is determined by the thread gap. The applicator is mounted on a stand with a handle and is corrosion-resistant.

1. There are three main types of coating thickness: theoretical wet film thickness, actual wet film thickness and dry film thickness.

The theoretical wet film thickness is the moment between the cutting edge of the coater and the coating film. However, when the coater coats the film on the base surface, due to the effect of material fluidity and coating speed, the film layer will produce a certain shear phenomenon, resulting in the actual wet film thickness is smaller than the theoretical value (generally 60~70% of the theoretical value, and the volume of the film layer is reduced after drying, and the dry film thickness is about 40~50% of the actual wet film thickness).

When using a stick type coater, if the storage width is wider than the width of the gap used for coating (i.e., the part where there is a gap between the coater and the base surface), the edge of the coating layer will increase by an uncontrollable increase compared with the original expectation, which will lead to an error in the theoretical wet film thickness.
