AS 3894.3-2002 standard provides a practical test method for in situ determination of the range and average dry-film thickness of protective coating systems or their components on metallic structures or fabrication. Applicable to storage tanks, bridges, chemical or petroleum processing equipment, pipelines, and industrial products such as vehicles and appliances where substrate film thickness, metallographic characteristics, surface condition and protective coating film lack conformity. Standards include magnetoresistance and magnetic Induction and eddy current methods, covering instrument calibrating, test surface preparation, test procedures and result reporting. The Appendix provides supplementary methods for cross-sectional microscopic inspection, microscopic measurement of coatings, wet film thickness determination and instrument calibrating.
