The ASTM D1005-1995 (2020) standard details four procedures for the measurement of dry-film thickness of organic coatings using Micrometers. Procedures A and B use a fixed Micrometer for the measurement of coatings and free films on rigid surfaces on a plane; Procedures C and D use a handheld Micrometer, which is equally applicable to both of the above situations. The standard states that the deformability of the coating may affect the accuracy and accuracy of the measurement, and is not suitable for coatings that are easily deformed under the load of the measuring instrument.
