The ASTM D1005-1995 (2007) standard provides a test method for the measurement of dry-film thickness of organic coatings using a Micrometer. Four procedures are included: A and B use a stationary Micrometer, and C and D use a handheld Micrometer. Procedures A and C are not recommended for coatings with Film thickness less than 12.5 microns (0.5 mils). The minimum Film thickness for procedures B and D depends on the Film thickness required to be able to remove the sample as a free film. The standard emphasizes that measurement accuracy may be affected by coating deformability and substrate uniformity, and notes safety and health responsibilities.
