The ASTM F1044-2005 standard provides a test method for the gluing or cohesion strength of calcium phosphoric acid coatings and metal coatings under uniaxial shear stress. This method is suitable for evaluating the degree of adhesion of coatings to substrates, or cohesion within coatings. Testing is performed by applying a shear load after a combination of coated and uncoated parts. Thermo-mechanical gluing or polymer gluing agents may be used. This standard is useful for quality control and design evaluation, but should not be used directly to calculate the ability of coatings to withstand environmental stresses. Processing variables such as substrate preparation, surface texture, coating technology or post-processing can significantly affect test results, so test samples should be representative of coatings in actual use.
