This part of the standard describes methods for determining the tear performance of coated fabrics. The tear resistance performance of the specimen is characterized by applying an active force on the notched specimen. The test can be carried out after the specimen has been conditioned in a standard environment or pre-soaked. The test results obtained through this test are not comparable when compared to those obtained by the constant speed tearing method. In carrying out the test, a pendulum testing machine is required, which consists of a sturdy frame, a pendulum, a mechanical or electronic device, and a gripper. Stability of these devices, which need to be designed and installed in accordance with the standard specifications and do not allow any movement during the test, can be ensured by means of fixtures.
