ASTM D4541-22 is a standard test method for evaluating the peeling strength of coatings on metal substrates, using a portable adhesion tester. This method is also suitable for coatings on rigid substrates such as plastics and wood. However, for concrete, a similar test using ASTM D7234 is recommended. This standard provides guidance for evaluating the adhesion capacity of coating systems and can be used as a complementary method to accelerated weathering testing to assess changes in coating performance over time. The testing process consists of two protocols: Scheme 1 is used to determine the maximum force applied on the sample until the coating separates from the substrate; Scheme 2 is used to confirm the integrity of the coating sample, using the minimum load standard for testing. ASTM D4541 is useful not only for quality control but also for the design and performance evaluation of coating systems.
