The ASTM D3335-85a (2020) standard provides a test method for the determination of low concentrations of lead, cadmium, and cobalt in Coatings by atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). This method is suitable for the detection of lead, cadmium, and cobalt in the nonvolatile portion of liquids in the ranges of 0.01% to 5%, 50 to 150 ppm, and 50 to 2000 ppm, respectively. The test may have some accuracy issues with samples of lead-containing organolead compounds, but it is suitable for elemental analysis in Coatings and their Dry-Film to ensure compliance with government regulations for heavy metals content.
