The ASTM D5796-20 standard describes a method for the measurement of dry-film thickness (DFT) of thin-layer coil coating systems by means of a drill-hole device. This test method utilizes a microscope to observe a precision-cut shallow-angle crater drilled into the film to determine the dry-film thickness of the film. The test is applied to a variety of rigid metal substrates, such as cold-rolled steel and aluminum, requiring substrate leveling. Measurement ranges from 0 to 3.5 mils (0 to 89 μm) and can be used for film thickness measurement on different substrates. Methods A and B are discussed in detail in the standard, covering accuracy and deviation for different instrument and process measurements.
